Lieven Segers
'Tales From The Boisterous Society'
26.02.2026 — 28.03.2026
Base Alpha Gallery presents Tales from the Boisterous Society, an exhibition featuring twenty-five years of photographic snapshots by Lieven Segers. As a visual artist, engaged organizer (of spaces like AAIMACHINE), and generous instructor, Segers is a familiar figure within the art scene. Less visible, but unconditionally present, is his photographic practice: a lasting and consistent exercise in observation, which Segers believes is the foundation of artistry.
The photos are intuitive snapshots of Segers' immediate environment. They depict urban and nightlife, public moments with an intimate character, and social dynamics. Raw and direct, often seemingly staged, the images with historical value oscillate between truth and deceit, humor and absurdity.
What binds this series together is the complicit gaze. Segers does not photograph a scene but a situation in which he himself is involved. His position is not that of an outsider or documentary photographer, but of a present participant. The images emerged among friends, without the intention of becoming public. By exhibiting them now, their meaning shifts: what was once a temporary joke becomes an archive. The laughter has faded.
Tales from the Boisterous Society presents a picture of a loud, energetic, and sometimes chaotic art world that evolves and transforms over twenty-five years. The exhibition does not feature an oeuvre against the wall; it displays a community. The connecting, engaged, humorous, and sincere character that defines Segers' work is woven throughout all layers of this project and exhibition.
